Sweet Treat Alternatives

May 15, 2018

For those of you that joined us for the 13th Annual Dam Run you may have noticed that we decided to change up the typical "post run" food offerings to promote healthier alternatives.  It's a reminder that we don't just promote exercise, but instead we want you to consider all the components that make up your wellness, including the obvious, what we eat!

Aside from our freshly blended smoothie bowls, we offered quick, sweet, and easy energy bites.  A grab and go snack loaded with whole "super" foods that not only satisfy a craving, but fuel you up without the quilt.  We received lots of positive feedback and wanted to share those recipes with you to try on your own!

  4. Form into approximately 20 balls

  5. Enjoy at room temperature or let chill in the refrigerator.  Will keep for up to 7 days in air tight container in the refrigerator.

Lemon Coconut Energy Balls

  • 1/4 cup chia seeds

  • 1 1/2 tablespoon lemon juice

Instructions:

  1. Add cashews to a food processor or blender, pulse a few times to break them down slightly

  2. Add all remaining ingredients and mix until combined

  3. For extra lemon flavor - add zest of one lemon.  For additional coconut - set aside coconut and roll balls in shredded coconut.

  4. Roll into approximately 20 balls

  5. Enjoy at room temperature or let chill in the refrigerator.  Will keep for up to 7 days in air tight container in the refrigerator.

When choosing a healthy alternative, treat, snack, dessert, etc, I like to think "GOOD vs. BETTER vs. BEST".  That way, we can prevent any labeling or negative associations with food.  Replacing these bites instead of say a brownie, slice of carrot cake, or lemon bar is taking the first step from "good"  to "better".  Sure, it may not be the "best" option, but it's a darn good replacement that you need not feel guilty about!
