Red Cross Certifications

The Edgar May Health and Recreation Center offers a variety of American Red Cross safety training courses through the yer in Lifeguard, Lifeguard Re-certification, CPR/AED/First Aid for adults, children, and infants, as well as Babysitters Training.  Our courses are open to anyone in our community looking to be certified.  Organizations interested in scheduling a training at their location should contact us.  

Interested participants may register over the phone (802-885-2568), by email, at the front desk, or online. 

Classes must meet their minimum required participants one week prior to registration or class will be canceled.



Participants must be at least 15 years in age, pass the pre-requisite swim test, and successfully complete the online module prior to course start.  Participants must schedule pre-requisite swim test with instructor prior to course start.

This is a blended learning course that requires access to a computer and internet.  Participants must complete a 7-hour online module prior to the in-person session.  Participants will learn essential lifguarding skills including surveillance techniques and CPR/AED/First Aid for the Professional Rescuer.  Upon successful completetion of the course, participants will be certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding.  All certifications last for two years.  

Pre-Requisite Swim Test: 

1. Swim 300 yards continuously using either front crawl or breast stroke. 

2. Swim 15 yards, dive to bottom, retrieve 10lb diving brick, kick back to all on back and exit the water within 1-minute and 40-seconds. 

3. Tread water with hands tucked under arms for 2-minutes.

Course times: Friday Night 5-9pm; Saturday 8am-4pm; Sunday 8am-4pm


Participants will learn the necessary skills needed to respond to emergencies that might require basic first aid or CPR for adults, children, and infants.  This course is designed for anyone with an interest in being able to make a difference in an emergency as well as for people who need to be re-certified in American Red Cross CPR/AED & First Aid.  Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be certified in American Red Cross Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED & First Aid. Participants must be at least 15 years in age. All certifications last for 2 years.

The Edgar May Health and Recreation Center offers two formats for the CPR/AED/First Aid (Adult, Child, & Infant) course:

Complete In-Person Format: Course is entirely face-to-face with instructor, usually 8am - 3pm
Blended Learning Format: Course has a 2.5 hour online module (requires computer with internet access) and 3 hour in-person session.

Participants should be between 11 - 15 years old in age.

Participants will learn the necessary skills needed to care for infants through school-age children. The course will focus on injury prevention, basic child care, decision making, creative play, interviewing, and problem solving. Each student will receive a Babysitter’s Training Handbook. Participants must attend the entire training and upon successful completion, will receive a printable certificate that they can share with potential employers. Participants should bring a packed lunch.
