FAQ

How does the system work?
The 69 solar panels on the swim center roof have a black metal absorber plate that captures the sun's energy.  A non-toxic antifreeze solution is circulated through the collector plates to transfer the solar heat to the pool water through a heat exchanger located in the boiler room.  On a sunny day each collector will warm to 102 degrees and then start transferring heat to the pool.  Over the course of a sunny day the solar array will capture over 2 million BTUs of energy, saving more than 35 gallons of propane fuel.

What are the SVRC's future plans for alternative energy?
The Southern Vermont Recreation Center is committed to becoming a showcase for renewable energy.  In addition to the current thermal solar system the Recreation Center will add a photovoltaic system to the roof of the historic Foundry building.  The Southern Vermont Recreation Center received a $125,000 grant from the Vermont Clean Energy fund that will be applied to this part of the project.  More money is needed to make this important part of our facility happen; if you would like to contribute please
