Swimming Lessons
The Southern Vermont Health and Recreation Center provides small group swimming lessons that allow participants to build confidence and attain skills in a safe and fun environment. By maintaining low instructor to student ratios swimmers are able to recieve more individual instruction and support. All SVHRC instructors are American Red Cross WSI certified.

Level 1: 10:00am-10:30am
Level 2: 10:0am-11:00am
Level 3: 11:00am-11:30am
Level 4: 11:30am-12:00pm

Ages 3-5
The purpose of this class is to help students feel comfortable in the water. The student will learn basic water safety rules, submerging their mouth, nose and eyes underwater and picking up a submerged object. They will also learn supported swimming on their back and front , exhaling underwater and supported floating on their front and back.
Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills
Ages 4-8
The purpose of this class is to give the students fundamental skills. This class teaches the student to move in the water with their head submerged . They will learn the front and back glide, treading water, bobbing in the water, the jellyfish float and using a combined stroke on front and back.
Level 3: Stroke Development
Ages 5 and Up
This class will build on the skills learned in level 2. The student will perfect their front and back crawl, kneeling or standing dive and rotary breathing in a horizontal position. The student will also learn the survival and back float , the butterfly kick and body motion.
Level 4: Stroke Improvement
Ages 7 and Up
During this class the student will be developing confidence in the strokes learned and improve other aquatic skills. The student will learn safe diving rules, dive from a stride position, a survival float, back float, elementary backstroke, breast and butterfly stroke and the front and back crawl.
Level 5: Stroke Refinement
This class will provide the student further coordination and refinement of strokes including the breast stroke, butterfly, front and back crawl. The student will also learn survival swimming, a tuck and pike surface dive, front and backstroke flip turn and the side stroke.
Level 6: Swimming and Skill Proficiency
The class refines the strokes so students swim them with ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Level 6 is designed with “menu” options. Each of these options focus on preparing students to participate in more advanced courses such as Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard Training. These options include: Personal Water Safety, Fundamentals of Diving, Lifeguard Readiness and Fitness Swimmer.

Classes are one half-hour
