Fitness Assessments
Fitness testing is a wonderful way to chart your current fitness level and track your progress over a period of time. The fitness assessments include general tests of cardiovascular endurance, muscle strength, flexibility, blood pressure, body composition, and more.
A variety of fitness testing and evaluations are available at the EdgarMay.
Flexibility Testing
Flexibility training promotes relaxation both mentally and physically. Body awareness, aligned posture, and proper breathing patterns will be enhanced and carry over into your daily life, which is the ultimate goal of all exercise and health care.
Potential areas tested will be the following:
Trunk Extension sit and reach
Bend Up
Hamstring stretch
Shoulder
1) Hands over head lying down
2) Standing up hands behind back
Body Composition
It is well established that excess body fat is associated with hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and hyperlipidemia. Body composition refers to the relative percentage of body weight that is fat and fat-free tissue. Measurements of height, weight, circumferences, and skinfolds are used to estimate body composition.
Potential areas tested will be the following:
Chest
Thigh
Arm Measurements
Waist to Hip Measurement
The basis of this measure as a coronary disease risk factor is the assumption is that fat stored around the waist poses a greater risk to health than fat stored elsewhere in the body.
Advantages: the WHR is a simple measure that can be taken at home or at the Gym, by anyone to monitor their own body composition levels.
Cardiovascular
The number one killer lurking in the modern world is none other than cardiovascular disease. The main causes for cardiovascular diseases are a sedentary lifestyle, and the consumption of unhealthy, fast food. Cardiovascular diseases are called silent killers as there are no signs or symptoms that indicate a cardiovascular problem. The only thing that can be done to avoid a cardiovascular disease is through good cardiovascular fitness.
Potential areas tested will be the following:
Tread mill 5 minute test
3 minute YMCA Step up test
Armed serviced test
Muscle Fitness (strength and endurance)
Increased muscular strength and endurance also provides protection against injury as they help to promote and maintain good posture and appropriate body mechanics when carrying out everyday activities like walking, lifting, and carrying objects. Strengthening the muscles of the abdomen, hips, lower back and legs will help to support the back in proper and help prevent lower back pain.
Muscle Strength
Muscular strength refers to the maximum amount of weight a person can lift in one effort.
Potential areas tested will be the following:
Chest Press Machine or Flat bench
Squat or Leg Press or leg extension
Muscle Endurance
Muscular endurance is the ability of a muscle to repeatedly exert itself.
Potential areas tested will be the following:
Push ups
Sit ups
