Frequently Asked Questions

1.    Where should I park?
The Southern Vermont Health and Recreation Center recommends that its members park at the Jones and Lamson Building on Bridge Street; we also strongly recommend that you cross the street at the crosswalk closest to the bridge and then travel behind the Foundry Building to the Rec Center. If that lot is full, additional parking is available along the river behind the Springfield Fire Station. The installation of a lighted foot bridge across the river is expected to make the fire department lot more accessible.

Please do not park in front of the Foundry Building, as this space is reserved for Therapy Pool patients. We also ask that you do not park across Clinton Street at Boccacio’s or the Shanghai Garden. Please do not park behind the foundry building, as this is an emergency access point.

2.    Should I lock my  belongings in my locker?
The SVHRC strongly recommends you purchase a lock to secure your belongings. The SVRC is not responsible for lost or stolen articles.

3.    Why do I need a second pair of shoes to use the Fitness Center?
This allows us to keep our equipment clean and in proper working order. It also creates a cleaner environment for our members.

4.    Why am I required to fill out a PAR-Q form?
For most people, physical activity should not pose any problem or hazard. PAR-Q has been designed to identify the small number of adults for whom physical activity might be inappropriate or those who should have medical advice concerning the type of activity most suitable for them.  Common sense is your best guide in answering these few questions. The PAR-Q forms are secured where our fitness director can access to them.

5.    Why don’t you allow children in the fitness center?
We do allow children ages 12 and 13 to use the fitness center under parental supervision. Children over 14 are allowed to use the fitness center after an orientation and completing a parental waiver form. Our fitness equipment is not designed for children under the age of 12; therefore we ask that your make other arrangements for you children if you wish to work out.

6.    What are they benefits of the steam room?
The benefits of steam bathing have been recognized for thousands of years. Today, steam baths are considered an integral method for purifying and detoxifying the skin and body, increasing circulation, stimulating the immune system, and encouraging complete physical and mental well-being.

Due to high temperatures and humidity, the steam room can be dangerous to your health.  We recommend that you consult your physician before you use the steam room.  Those with medical conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, respiratory problems, and those who are pregnant, should avoid exposure to heat and humidity.

Steam rooms are for adults only.

7.    Why is there no diving in the pools?
For safety reasons the SVRC does not allow diving. Please refrain from diving into the pool.

8.    Why do I have to shower prior to swimming?
Showering before using our pools helps keep our water as clean as possible and will in turn keep our chlorine levels low.

9.    What is adult lap swim?
Adult Lap Swim is a dedicated time for adults over age 18 to swim laps. We ask that children and non-lap swimmers refrain from using the pool during these times. Please consult the lifeguard on duty if space allows other activities during adult lap swimming times.
