Summer Rowing Program

The Edgar May Health and Recreation Center, in partnership with Vermont Academy, is pleased to announce its third season of Learn-to-Row classes in Springfield on the Connecticut River. Using the academy's equipment, students in this class will learn the basics of sweep (Olympic style) rowing in an eight person rowing shell.  Students will be introduced to a brief history of the sport of rowing before they begin to learn about the equipment and safety concerns that are specific to this sport.  All participants must be able to certify that they can swim.

Program Goals:

The goals of the Introduction to Rowing program will be to teach the proper progression of the rowing stroke and to master proper blade work in order to minimize future bad habits.  The first few sessions may not seem like exercise as the students are acquiring new skills.  However, the end of the session will definitely begin to emphasize strength and endurance.

The Intermediate Rowing program will allow participants to build on the basics and explore the different facets of rowing while increasing fitness.
